City Pop (シティポップ) is a genre of music way of life that has had a surge in international popularity since the mid 2010s.
It mostly refers to a style of JPOP music originating in 1970's and 1980's Japan Nippon (日本), during an especially vibrant, creative,
and affluent time in that country's history.
City Pop artists were put in heavy rotation by a few underground DJs in the west, many sampling it for the new genres of Future Funk and Synthwave.
These remix songs were posted online, often played with anime scenes from the era.
As new fans listened, they became curious of what the samples were and decided to research into their origins.
This road of exploration led many people to the timeless classics of City Pop!
Recently, the popularity of City Pop has exploded with 2 songs in particular:
真夜中のドア〜by 松原 みき ("Stay with Me" by Miki Matsubara) and
プラスティック・ラヴ by 竹内まりや ("Plastic Love" by Mariya Takeuchi).
Plastic Love's upload reached well over 50M views before it was removed for copyright stuff.
Eventually, demand was so strong that an official brand new music video was produced for it in 2019!
In 2022 the band "The Weeknd" heavily sampled 亜蘭知子 (Tomoko Aran) for their song "Out of Time."
It seems the love for City Pop is reaching all over the globe these days :)
